Tested Worship – Daniel 3:1-7
Ice Breaker
- Read Daniel 3:1-7 as a group.
- If you could create a holiday to celebrate something important to you, what would it be and how would you celebrate it?
Loving God Unreservedly
- Nebuchadnezzar’s praise of Daniel’s God in chapter 2 was brief and short lived. How can we tell when someone’s praise and repentance is truly sincere?
- What things in this world compete with our devotion to God?
Loving People Sacrificially
- What were the people commanded to do? (3:4–5)
- What happened when the music began? (3:7)
- If someone in authority over you told you to do something wrong, how would you respond?
- What does this passage reveal about the nature of true worship and the consequences of idolatry?
Making Disciples Purposefully
- What practical step can you take to disciple someone (Matt. 28:19-20; Col. 3:15-17), even if it feels uncomfortable?
- Pray that the Lord would use CEFC to be a light in a dark world and guide us to share the gospel with our community during Holy Week.
Dig Deeper (optional/personal study)
- A biblical definition of worship emerges through key scriptural passages that establish its essential nature and purpose. How can you put into practice the lessons of worship and service that we learned from Daniel 3?
- 1) Worship is meeting the living and holy God and giving Him the honor that belongs to Him alone. In Scripture, God reveals Himself as the One who must be approached with reverence (Ex. 3:1–6), and He commands that worship be directed to Him only (Ex. 34:14). Jesus explains that true worshipers come to God “in spirit and truth” (Jn. 4:23–24), meaning worship must be sincere, from the heart, and aligned with God’s revealed truth.
- 2) Worship means giving God the honor He deserves. The psalter said to give God honor He deserves (Ps. 29:1–2) and give glory to His name (Ps. 96:8). God deserves the highest praise because of his greatness (Ps. 96:4). These verses highlight that worship is about recognizing God’s worth and responding to His greatness.
- 3) Worship includes physical actions that express an inner heart of devotion. Scripture shows people bowing before God (Ex. 34:8; 2 Chr. 20:18) and falling face down in prostration (Gen. 17:3; Mk. 3:11) as outward signs of humility and surrender. We are also called to worship God with reverence and awe (Hebrews 12:28), showing honor that matches His holiness.
- 4) Worship is possible because Christ offered Himself as the perfect sacrifice for us (Heb. 10:1–10). Through His work, we can draw near to God, and when we draw near to Him, He draws near to us (Jas. 4:8). This kind of worship creates real communion with God. As we worship and serve, we also join God’s larger redemptive work in the world. Paul teaches that the church is one body with many members (1 Cor. 12:12–27), and true worship honors God when each part serves faithfully, building up the whole body for His purposes.
