Factious People – Titus 3:9-1

Ice Breaker

  1. Read Titus 3:9-11 as a group.
  2. What real-life situations can you think of where you have seen divisive behavior disrupt community?

Loving God Unreservedly

  1. How does this scripture emphasize the importance of focusing on essential truths in our faith journey?
  2. In what ways does understanding God’s grace lead us to approach others who are divisive?

Loving People Sacrificially

  1. Paul contrasts his teaching concerning what is “excellent and profitable” (v. 8) with the foolish controversies of the false teachers, which are “unprofitable and worthless” (v. 9). What is the biblical standard for what is valuable or beneficial? Compare 1 Timothy 4:8; 2 Timothy 3:16; and Philippians 4:8. How does this compare with our culture’s values today?
  2. Why is it important to avoid controversies and arguments? (3:9)
  3. What practices might help us maintain unity in our relationships while still having honest conversations?
  4. How can the teachings from this passage encourage us in our personal efforts to resolve conflict?
  5. How do you think focusing on the teachings of this passage change the way we address conflict?

Making Disciples Purposefully

  1. Good works are a major theme in Titus. If Christians are saved not because of their works but because of God’s mercy (Titus 3:5), why does Paul repeatedly call believers to devote themselves to good works (2:7, 14; 3:8, 14)?
  2. How do good works relate to our mission and calling in the world (3:1)? How do good works give evidence of whether our faith in Christ and knowledge of God is genuine (1:16)?
  3. Whom will you serve this week as a way of sharing Christ's love?

Dig Deeper (optional/personal study)

  1. Research: Take time to reflect on resolving conflict, sin, or difficult situations in the church.

  • Titus 3:10 sets forth a three-step process for correcting and disciplining one who “stirs up division.” Why does Paul call for church discipline in response to an unrepentant, divisive person in the church? See 1 Timothy 6:4; 2 Timothy 2:23; Titus 1:10–14. How does Titus 3:11 support the command to “have nothing more to do” with such a person? Compare Paul’s instructions here with Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 18:15–17.
