Worldview: Attitude – Titus 3:3-8
Ice Breaker
- Read Titus 3:3-8 as a group.
- If you could travel to any place in the world, where would you go and what would you want to do there? Allow time for every group member to answer.
Loving God Unreservedly
- How has reflecting on these verses changed the way you think and feel about God today?
- God has poured out his Spirit on you as much as his Spirit was poured out on Jesus, how does this change the way you live your life?
Loving People Sacrificially
- Why does God save people? (3:4–5)
- In Titus 3:3–7, Paul magnificently recounts what we once were, apart from Christ and what God did to save us through Christ. These verses provide a gospel basis for the instructions in verses 1–2 (note the word “for” in v. 3). Why is it important for Paul at this point in the letter to remind Christians that they were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, enslaved by sin, envious, and hateful?
- List at least four contrasts between the attitude and actions called for in verses 1–2 and the believers’ lives before being saved by Christ, described in verse 3.
- What role does the Holy Spirit play in a person’s salvation? (3:5)
- What is the result of being justified by faith? (3:7)
Making Disciples Purposefully
- How would you explain God’s kindness to someone who is not a Christian?
- Pray and ask God to create an opportunity where you could share God’s kindness (the gospel) with a non-Christian this week?
Dig Deeper (optional/personal study)
- Research: Look up the Bible verses associated with the three statements below.
- Which best describes your life before you were saved: foolish, deceived, enslaved, malicious, envious, or hateful? Did you feel unloved (Hos 1:6), alienated (Hos 1:9), blind (Matt 23:26), lost (Luke 19:10), rebellious (1 Tim 1:9), hopeless (Eph 2:12), or dead (Eph 2:1)?
- God not only saves us from sin, slavery, and foolishness; he also makes us “heirs according to the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:7). How does this glorious future inheritance relate to our new identity in Christ? Consider Romans 8:17; Galatians 3:29; 4:7.
- Good works are a major theme in Titus. If Christians are saved not because of their works but because of God’s mercy (Titus 3:5), why does Paul repeatedly call believers to devote themselves to good works (2:7, 14; 3:8, 14)? How do good works relate to our mission and calling in the world (3:1)? How do good works give evidence that our faith in Christ and knowledge of God is genuine (1:16)?
