A Greater Temple – Haggai 2:20-23

Ice Breaker

  1. Read Haggai 2:20-23 as a group.
  2. In what ways do we see God’s sovereignty over the nations today? (Talk about current events worldwide, i.e., Israel & Gaza, Ukraine & Russia, etc.)

Loving God Unreservedly

  1. How does this passage connect with God’s promises to King David and his descendants? (2 Samuel 7:12-16)
  2. How might Zerubbabel’s role foreshadow the coming of Jesus Christ? (cf. Matt. 1:12; Lk. 3:24; cf. Acts 13:22-23)

Loving People Sacrificially

  1. What excuses do we make for not doing the will of God in our lives?
  2. What did the "signet ring" represent in ancient times, and why is this important for understanding Zerubbabel’s role? (vs. 23; cf. Jer. 31:31-33; 2 Cor. 1:22-23; Eph. 1:13-14)
  3. What does it mean to be a faithful servant of God in times of transition or difficulty?
  4. How can we trust in God's promises, even when we don't see immediate fulfillment?

Making Disciples Purposefully

  1. How do you see the fulfillment of God’s promises and faithful messianic king in the person and work of Jesus Christ? (Is. 11:1-10)
  2. Who can you share the good news of Jesus’ gospel with this week?

Dig Deeper (optional/personal study)

  1. Research: There is lots of shaking, overthrowing, and destruction in the beginning of this last part of Haggai. Read through some other passages from the Old Testament and New Testament that describe having sovereign power over all creation; visible and invisible.
