Dig Deeper (optional/personal study)

  1. Research: The narrative in John 11 is so profound that it touches our lives in numerous ways.

Analyze the themes found in John 11:

  • It deals with love (v. 5) and makes clear that God’s love doesn’t prevent God’s people from experiencing pain, sickness, and sorrow.
  • It also deals with hope and the loss of hope (vv. 3, 8–10, 21–22, 32).
  • The main emphasis is on faith, the faith of the disciples (vv. 1–16) and the sisters (vv. 17–44) as well as the faith of the family’s friends and the Jewish religious leaders’ lack of faith (vv. 45–57).

How can you strengthen your faith when facing obstacles:

  • When you are afraid, read 2 Timothy 1:7; When you feel trapped and as if there is no hope, read Psalm 121:1–2; When you feel as if something is impossible, read Philippians 4:13; When you are discouraged, read Psalm 43:5; When you feel all alone, read Isaiah 43:2; When you have a dream that seems beyond reality, read Ephesians 3:20; When you’re in doubt, read Ephesians 1:14.
