Loving God Unreservedly
Loving People Sacrificially
- What were the people really asking for when they wanted to know God’s ‘name’? (Ex 3:12-13)
- What are some of the fears you think Moses was feeling?
- What motivates God to act on behalf of his people? (Ex 3:7–10)
- According to (Ex 3:19–21), who is going to do the fighting in this battle?
Making Disciples Purposefully
- What reassurance does God give Moses? (Ex 3:12–22)
- How can having God’s assurance help us witness to our community that needs the gospel?
Dig Deeper (optional/personal study)
- Research: The Septuagint (LXX), the Greek translation of the Old Testament, renders the opening of the phrase in Exodus 3:14, I AM who I AM, as ἐγώ εἰμί (egō eimi), which amounts to a title for God elsewhere in the Old Testament (e.g., Is. 43:10, 25; 45:18; 46:4; 51:12; 52:6). When Jesus describes Himself as “I am” in John 8:58, the Jews attempt to stone Him because they interpret His words as a blasphemous claim to deity. Take time to read all seven I AM sayings of Jesus in the gospel of John:
- “I am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 48; see also John 6:41, 51)
- “I am the light of the world” (John 8:12; 9:5)
- “I am the door” (John 10:7, 9)
- “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11, 14)
- “I am the resurrection and the life” (John 11:25)
- “I am the way, and the truth, and the life” (John 14:6)
- “I am the true vine” (John 15:1; see also John 15:5).
