The Church In Thyatira – Revelation 2:18-29
Ice Breaker
- Read Revelation 2:18-29. What would God say to your church? Each group member briefly speak a mini letter with both praise and exhortation to CEFC. Then ask God to begin his work at CEFC by changing you.
Loving God Unreservedly
- Jezebel (v. 20) is an Old Testament character who symbolizes spiritual adultery (1 Kings 16:31). How was the so-called prophetess in Thyatira like her namesake?
- What is the significance of Jesus’ eyes being like a flame of fire (v. 18)? How about Jesus’ feet being like bronze (vs. 18; cf. Rev. 1:15)?
Loving People Sacrificially
- Works/deeds is a noun that is translated to mean, what you do (vs. 19). What is the relationship of your works, with love, faith, service, and endurance?
- Love – for God and man (Rev. 2:4).
- Faith – faithfulness, fidelity, loyalty (Rev. 2:13).
- Service – directed towards fellow believers and all who are in need (Heb. 6:10).
- Endurance – patient endurance, perseverance, steadfastness, fortitude (Rev. 1:9).
- What can you do this week to grow and add to your service for Christ?
- At the end of the verse (vs. 19), the adjective, more than, means greater than or better than, it means that there is a constant improvement in all these things. How do we improve on all these things as we love God and others?
- Leading people astray is the work of the devil (Rev. 12:9; 13:14; 19:20; 20:3, 10). Consider the time given by Christ for repentance (vv. 21-23). How should we take responsibility for the errors of others in the church?
- What judgments did the Son of God pronounce on the one He called Jezebel (vv. 22-23)?
- How are we to remain firm in our spiritual progress (vs. 19)? The text addressed to the rest of you (vs. 25), what is significant about this phrase?
Making Disciples Purposefully
- The expectation of sharing in divine rule over the whole world is rooted in Daniel (7:9-14); the Ancient of Days. Early Christianity understood this as a reference to God’s future rule through his Messiah (Matt. 19:28; 1 Cor. 6:2-3; 2 Tim. 2:12). In receiving of the gift of Jesus the Messiah, we also gain final victory. How does this help us witness to a broken world?
Dig Deeper (Optional/Personal Study)
- Research: Three allusions cited in the church of Thyatira: Jezebel (Rev. 2:20; 1 Kings 16:31-21:25), rod of iron (Rev. 2:27; Ps. 2:8-9), and the morning star (Rev. 2:28; Num. 24:17). How do the Jewish Scriptures help us interpret the background of the church in Thyatira? In what way can we include repentance and renewal in our devotional life this week?
